HERI Africa Research Chair in Mathematics Education, Dr. Simon Karuku, joined representatives from partner institutions for an intensive Good Financial Grants Practice (GFGP) In-Person Course organised by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) in collaboration with the HERI Africa initiative.
The five-day training held from 20th-24th July 2026, provided participants with practical knowledge and skills in seven key areas: Good Financial Grants Practice, Financial Management and Controls, Grant Management and Compliance, Governance for Not-for-Profit Organisations, Budgeting, Human Resource Management, and Procurement.
Through interactive sessions and hands-on learning, participants examined the systems and practices required to promote sound financial stewardship, strengthen accountability and ensure compliance with grant requirements.
The training comes at a time when effective grant management is increasingly important for institutions involved in research and higher education. Strong financial systems and effective governance enable institutions to manage resources responsibly while ensuring that research investments achieve their intended impact.
The course concluded with the awarding of Certificates of Participation and Completion to all participants.
For HERI Africa, the training forms part of its broader commitment to strengthening the institutional capacity of partner institutions. By equipping institutions with the skills and systems needed to manage grants effectively, the initiative is contributing to stronger foundations for research, innovation and higher education transformation.
The successful completion of the course marks another step in strengthening collaboration among HERI Africa partner institutions and building the capacity required to support sustainable research and development outcomes.
